L2P LEARNER DRIVER PROGRAM

The Colac Otway TAC L2P Program is proudly funded by the Department of Transport and supported by Colac Toyota, Rotary Club Colac West, Lions Club Colac, Rotary Club Colac, are-able, Colac Tigers and Tyrepower.

Community Hub Inc. as a non for profit organisation has been proud to deliver the TAC Colac Otway L2P Learner Driver Program since 2013. The TAC Colac Otway L2P Learner Driver Program is a volunteer based program that provides assistance to learner drivers that don’t have the resources to achieve the 120 mandatory hours of driving experience required to obtain a probationary licence.

The TAC Colac Otway L2P Learner Driver Program supports young people to address transport barriers in order to improve pathways to employment and further education within the community. In a rural locality, access to transport is particularly important for community members to engage with services.

To date the TAC Colac Otway L2P Learner Driver Program has supported over 75 Learner Drivers to work towards and obtain their probationary licence.  In a combined effort between the Community Hub Inc and as part of a one-off TAC initiative, the program received a new car in January 2023 adding a second vehicle to our fleet.

The TAC Colac Otway L2P Learner Driver Program requires support from local volunteers who are interested in supporting these learner drivers. Learner drivers would not enjoy the benefits of this program without the commitment from our valued volunteers.

To become a TAC Colac Otway L2P Learner Driver volunteer mentor all you need is:

  • A full Victorian driver’s licence
  • A minimum commitment of 1 hour per week
  • Enthusiasm to support a young person (16-22 years old)
  • Pass a Police check, a licence check and a Working With Children check
  • Complete TAC Colac Otway L2P Learner Driver Program training prior to starting

What else do you need to know?

Before entering the TAC Colac Otway L2P Learner Driver Program each learner driver undertakes a paid lesson with a professional driving instructor.

Learner drivers will also undertake paid lessons with a professional driving instructor as required throughout the program.

This ensures that the volunteer mentor is not responsible for providing instruction and rather is there to support the learner driver to achieve the hours they require to obtain their probationary licence.

Volunteer mentors will be required to participate in mentor training and will have the opportunity to attend quarterly meetings with other mentors to receive program updates and celebrate achievements.

How to apply?

The best way to apply for the program as a learner or mentor is through the VicRoads website (application here).

On the website you can find application forms which can either be completed online and emailed to colacotwayl2p@communityhubinc.org.au or you can print off the form from the website and once filled in drop it off, or post it to us here at Community Hub Inc at 34 Connor St Colac.

Once we have received your application form, we will contact you to discuss the next steps in the program.
